Reminder

Today, we took the Math Mid-term and I finished my second inquiry essay. The book I read is called Sula. My essential question is how do friendships change over time. According to the description of this book, it is about two girls who were once best friends and then grow into enemies. After I read it, I think it is more about good v.s evil. Similar to the previous book I read, which is Snow Flower and The Secret Fan, this book also talks about the friendship between two girls who grow up together. For my next book, I would like to learn more about friendships between boys or between those who did not grow up together.

I am really excited for Spring Break because I am going to Shanghai! Here is a list of the things I need to do during break (in case I don't remember):

1. Start working on twelfth night project
2. English 9 online
3. Start reading book and writing essay for Urban Ecology class.(Maybe)

Poem "Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night" - Dylan Thomas

Similar to what Lord Byron did in "She Walks In Beauty", Thomas also made contrast between light and night. The poem is written by a man to his dying father. We all understand that death is unavoidable and most people are afraid of death. However, there is strength lying in each and everyone of us; therefore, we should use our strength and passion to fight for living. The poet uses wise, wild, good and brave as examples to encourage his father to be hopeful and remain strong. I think this is a very touching poem. It also reminds me of "To The Virgins, to Make most of Time". No matter how much time we have left, we should use it wisely.

Poems

I really enjoyed the two poems we read in class this week.

"To the Virgins, to Make Much of Time" by Robert Herrick

The poet points out the sad fact that time flies. And as we grow up, we will only have less and less time left in our life. Therefore, he encourage the younger generation to embrace the beauty of youth and take advantages of the opportunities that are given to make life extraordinary. I agree with him that time goes by very fast. I still remember the very first day of high school, and now I am less than fourth months away from graduation. Looking back, I think that I should have use my time more wisely.

"She Walks in Beauty" Lord Byron

The poet saw a gorgeous woman walking gracefully. She is extremely beautiful that her eyes, cheeks and brows are all perfect. In addition to her physical appearance, her heart is also pure and innocent.

This is a very sweet love poem. The author uses similies and personifications to compare the woman with light and to create an image of a beautiful woman

This reminds me of the love Orsino has for Olivia. He falls in love with Olivia majorly because she is young and beautiful. It is interesting to see that when people see others, if he/she is pretty outside, we assume that person has a nice personality as well.
